CCHS Driving Permits

Beginning Monday, July 15, Cocke County High School will be selling student parking permits at school to eligible students. Any student who is a licensed driver and who plans to drive and park on campus will need to purchase a permit by Aug. 16, 2019. Students may come to the school Mondays—Fridays, from 9:00 a.m. until noon to do so. To purchase a permit, a student must present the following: a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, car license tag number along with make/model/year of vehicle(s) being driven. The permits are $15 each. Students becoming eligible to drive later in the school year may purchase their hang tag only after they become eligible to drive.

Del Rio VFD dinner

The Del Rio Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fundraiser dinner on Saturday, July 13, from 5:00—8:00 p.m. at Jones Nature Center, S. Hwy. 107, Del Rio, across from Del Rio Elementary School. The menu includes choice of BBQ sandwich or hamburger, baked beans, slaw, drink, and dessert. Cost is $8 per plate. An auction will start at 7 p.m. Live music will be provided. Clean-up at Clark Community Cemetery, Del Rio

The Clark Cemetery Committee asks that families with loved ones buried in the Clark Community Cemetery, Del Rio, meet July 8 at 9:00 a.m. to clears the flowers from the ground. Garbage bags will be provided.

Stokely Memorial Library Summer Reading Program

All children are invited to Stokely Memorial Library’s annual Summer Reading Program this summer on every Thursday in June and July (with the exception of July 4) at 11 a.m. Admission is free. Various readers and performers will be on hand to carry out this year’s theme: “A Universe of Stories.” A craft and light snack will also be provided. On July 25, the program will close with a pizza party. Perfect attendance is not required; readers can still earn prizes by reading library books at any time during the program. Dandridge Senior Center

The Dandridge Senior Center will hold a beef brisket/pulled pork dinner on Friday, July 26, from 4:00—7:00 p.m. or until sold out. Menu also includes baked beans, coleslaw, chips, homemade desserts, and drink. Tickets now available or may be purchased at door. Cost is $12 for adults; $6 for children ages 4-12. for beef brisket dinner; $10 for pulled pork dinner. Proceeds go to help with the center’s expenses. Empower Cocke County

The Empower Cocke County “Buy the Pound” thrift store now has free Bibles and Christian literature, plus free children’s books and stuffed animals for any children. The store is open Thursday—Saturday from 10-3.

LIHEAP applications being accepted

Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authority, Inc. is accepting applications for the annual Energy Assistance program. Applicants must provide a printout from their energy vendor showing the usage charges for the last 12 months. Applicants may have applications mailed to them by calling 423-623-3066 or 423-318-6933. Applications may be mailed back to DCEA, P.O. Box 68, Newport, TN 37822 or turned in at the Douglas-Cherokee Neighborhood Service Center, 353 Driskill Circle, Newport, TN 37821.

DAV Open House/Service Hours

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 102, Pine St., holds Open House with coffee and fellowship Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until noon. Officers are available to discuss possible disability benefits on that day, plus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m.

Tai Chi Classes

New Tai Chi classes begin monthly. Contact instructors Denise Webb (423-625-2995) or Rita Orick (423-487-2876) for times and locations. Classes are free and sponsored by Cocke County Office on Aging/Senior Center

Free meals for senior citizens

Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authority, Inc.’s Senior Nutrition Program offers free hot meals Mondays-Fridays at 11 a.m. at the Jones Building, 203 Bowman Dr. to those 60 or older or spouses of those age 60 or older.
