Every Thursday, the Newport Plain Talk features a local “Church of the Week,” complete with a sketch of its history and a photo. Cave Hill Baptist Church

Homecoming will be celebrated at Cave Hill Baptist Church on Sunday, Aug. 18, with Johnny Butler bringing the morning message. Special music will be provided by Danny and Patsy Carter. Lunch will follow in the fellowship hall. Pastor James Suggs and congregation welcome all to attend.

Edgemont Church of God

Bishop David Griffis, former pastor of Edgemont Church of God, will return to the church Sunday, Aug. 18, as guest speaker at the church’s annual homecoming and celebration of the church’s centennial anniversary. Worship services start at 10:45 a.m. All former pastors and their families, plus all former members and their families, are invited. The church is located at 202 Clevenger Cut Off Road, Newport. Pastor Mark and Geri Hatley and congregation welcome all to this very special event.

Long Creek Christian Church

The monthly gospel singing at Long Creek Christian Church will be Saturday, Aug. 17, at 6:30 p.m. Featured groups this month include Strong Ties, The Smith Family, and Sacred Journey. Bring a lawn chair and join everyone on the lawn for some good gospel singing. In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors. Long Creek Christian Church is located at 3310 Sane Road, in the Long Creek community. All are welcome.

Dandridge Full Gospel Ministries

There will be a benefit singing, food, and auction for Paula Poe Norton on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Dandridge Full Gospel Ministries, 550 East Meeting St., Dandridge, starting at 2:30 p.m. Singing and serving of food starts at 3:00 p.m. and an auction will be held at 5:00 p.m. There will also be games, cake walks, and more. Agape Baptist Church (White Pine)

There will be a yard sale at Agape Baptist Church, 3316 Roy Messer Hwy., White Pine, at Fred Sharp Rd., on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will combos will be available to carry out or eat in at the Agape Cafe. Baked goods will also be for sale. Proceeds go to ministry outreach programs and building fund.

Pleasant Grove Baptist Church

Vacation Bible School will be held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 1:00—5:00 p.m. There will be games, blow-ups, stories, and crafts, followed by a cookout at 5:30 p.m. The theme is “God’s Faithfulness to Joseph.” Classes for all ages will be offered. The church is located at 1645 Pleasant Grove Rd., Newport. All are invited.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Hartford

Locust Ridge will be singing on Sunday night, Aug. 18, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3404 Grassy Fork Rd., Hartford, at 7 p.m. Pastor Tinker Clark and congregation welcome all to attend.

Newport Seventh-day Adventist Church

The monthly community Gospel/Bluegrass music program at Newport Seventh-day Adventist Church will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. Featured musician this month is Montana Condevillamar, age 16, whose music ranges from contemporary Christian to Southern gospel. Montana has been singing publicly since age 6 and has recorded CD’s. Everyone is cordially invited.

Allen’s Missionary Baptist Church

His Fold will be singing at Allen’s Missionary Baptist Church, Dark Hollow Rd., Cosby, on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. Pastor Leon Large and congregation invite all to attend.

Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church

On Saturday, Aug. 17, at 3:00 p.m. Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church will welcome Brother Kenny Mattison for a program about the C.J. Mize Scholarship Program. Pastor Jesse L. Jones, Jr. and members welcome all to this special event.

Old Time Gospel Missionary Baptist Church

The Wells of Joy from Travelers Rest, South Carolina will be singing at Old Time Gospel Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, Aug. 18, during the 6 p.m. worship service. Pastor Glenn Ball and congregation well all.

Parrottsville United Methodist Church

The public is invited to an evening with Gary Christian at Parrottsville Elementary School on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. Christian’s daughter Channon Christian was murdered in Knoxville in 2007. In addition to Christian’s remarks, there will be worship music, a concession stand, and a silent cake auction. Proceeds will go toward community outreach and possibly a scholarship fund. The event is hosted by Parrottsville United Methodist Church.

Newport Presbyterian Church

In partnership with eight other churches, Newport Presbyterian Church is bringing a unique experience to Newport in September. Those attending will be able to walk through Biblical scenes representing some of the most influential events in the life of Jesus culminating in a heartbreaking choral rendition of the Crucifixion and Resurrection. Come and experience how the Son of God lived during His time on earth. The event is planned for Sept. 13-14 at Newport Presbyterian Church, Hedrick Drive (overlooking Cocke County High School).

East TN Baptist Association

All Cocke County churches are invited to share in free packets of materials for your congregations to deliver throughout the community to spread the word of Christ. You can add a flyer or card with your church information to each packet. Every denomination is encouraged to join in this effort. Prayer meetings at Cocke County Courthouse

East Tennessee Baptist Association has prayer meetings on the Cocke County Courthouse steps the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome. For more information, call 423-623-8220

Parrottsville United Methodist Church

Parrottsville United Methodist Church has a clothes closet every Saturday from 8-11 in the church’s Fellowship Hall. Free clothes for all ages will be available. Donations to the clothes closet should be dropped off on Saturdays from 8-11. (Please note change in hours of operation.) The closet is closed on Saturdays before holidays. All are welcome.

Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church

The Chestnut Hill Clothes Closet, Dandridge, is open every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Free seasonal clothes will be available. Everyone is welcome.

Dandridge food pantry and thrift store

The Dandridge Ministerial Association food pantry, 910 Industrial Road, Dandridge, is open for emergency food on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. until noon. The thrift store is open Mondays—Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The store offers a wide variety of gently used, clean items for sale. A $5 bag sale of every day clothing is underway. In addition to clothing, they also have furniture, glassware, toys, linens, electrical appliances, and many other home items. For more information, call Ginger Patrick (865-397-1833).

Pay It Forward Outreach Ministries
