Every Thursday, the Newport Plain Talk features a local “Church of the Week,” complete with a sketch of its history and a photo. East TN Baptist Association
The East Tennessee Baptist Association is celebrating its 180th anniversary this year. Special receptions will be held Sunday, May 19, at English Creek Baptist Church, and Sunday, July 7, at First Baptist Church, from 2-4 p.m. Everyone is invited.
Lawson’s Chapel United Methodist Church
Homecoming will be celebrated at Lawson’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 2722 Indian Creek Rd., Dandridge, on Sunday, May 19, starting with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. Rev. Denny Ford will bring the message during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. A meal will follow. Church pastor Rev. Bill Cheatham and congregation welcome all to attend.
Oven Creek United Methodist Church
Rev. Mark Barber and congregation invite all to the annual Decoration Day service at Oven Creek United Methodist Church, Parrottsville, on Sunday, May 26. Lunch will be served at noon. All are welcome.
True Gospel Baptist Church
Revival services will be held at True Gospel Baptist Church from Sunday, May 19, through Friday, May 24. Sunday services start at 6 p.m. Weeknight worship starts at 7 p.m. Robert Ball, Eric Hurst, and Ricky Phillips will be preaching. Special music each night will be brought by Carson Creek Singers, the Steve Renner Family, the Ronnie Hall Singers, Stone Mountain, Centerview, and others. Brown’s Chapel Church
Revival services will start at Brown’s Chapel Church, Parrottsville on Monday, May 20, at 7 p.m. each night with Rev. David Tweed of Greenville preaching. Rev. Randall Frisbee and congregation invite everyone to attend.
Liberty Hill Baptist Church
All are invited to a special singing service at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, Hwy. 160, three miles north of Bybee, on Saturday, May 18, at 7 p.m. Pastor Bobby Samples and congregation welcome all.
Long Creek Christian Church
Gospel singing for the summer begins at Long Creek Christian Church, 3310 Sane Rd., Parrottsville, at the church’s Gospel Barn on Saturday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. Featured groups will be The Master’s Trio, Foundations Quartet, and The Scott Family. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy good gospel music out on the lawn. In case of bad weather, the event will be moved into the barn. All are invited. On Sunday, May 19, The Smith Family will provide special music at the church’s morning worship service at 10:45 a.m. Again, all are invited.
Holder’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church
All local women are invited to a Women’s Retreat at Holder’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Cosby, on Saturday, May 18, at 5 p.m. There will be a meal followed by the program, “Who’s Following In Your Footsteps?”, presented by speaker Cynthia Freeman. Admission is free; no pre-registration is required.
Newport Seventh-day Adventist Church
Each third Saturday, Newport Seventh-day Adventist Church hosts a community-wide Bluegrass/gospel music program at 7 p.m. Various groups and artists from different denominations come together to share their talents. Those interested in being a part of this program should call Dianne Himmelwright at 336-471-4916 to schedule available dates. The church will also hold Vacation Bible School June 10-14 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each night. This year’s event will feature a science-inspired, Christian-focused theme and is for children ages 4-12 to get a hands-on introduction to science and learn about Jesus at the same time. Newport Seventh-day Adventist Church is located at 125 Hedrick Drive, Newport.
Pigeon Valley Baptist Church
Homecoming will be celebrated at Pigeon Valley Baptist Church on Sunday, May 19, starting with singing at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served after the service. Pastor Ransom Hall and congregation welcome all to attend.
Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church
Spring Revival 2019 services will be held at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church on May 20-22, starting at 7 p.m. nightly. Messages will be brought by Rev. William Butler, pastor of Rock of Ages Baptist Church, Morristown, on Monday, Rev. C.C. Mills, Jr., pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Greeneville, on Tuesday, and the Tag Team Duo of Rev. Christopher R. Battle, Sr., pastor of The Underground Church, Knoxville, and Rev. Charles Lomas, Jr., pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Knoxville, on Wednesday. Macedonia pastor Rev. Jesse L. Jones, Jr. and congregation invite everyone to attend these special services.
Cosby Missionary Baptist Church
Homecoming will be held at Cosby Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, May 26, with featured singer Carol Martin bringing special music. Pastor Cleo Williamson and congregation invite all to attend.
Hill’s Union United Methodist Church
The annual homecoming celebration at Hill’s Union United Methodist Church will be held Sunday, May 26 with gospel singing by The Supernals at 10:30 a.m. Worship service starts at 11:45 a.m. with Rev. Darrell Chambers bringing the message. A covered dish dinner will follow in the church fellowship hall. The church is located at 2383 Hills Chapel Road, Dandridge. All are invited.
Mt. View Baptist Church
Southern Grace will be singing at Mt. View Baptist Church on Sunday, May 19, during their morning worship service. On Monday, May 20, the church will hold a bean dinner fundraiser for their youth group. The menu includes pinto beans, cornbread, kraut & wieners, dessert, and drink for $5 per plate. Carry-outs will be available as will deliveries to local businesses. Proceeds will help send the youth to Hearts on Fire Youth Conference in Pigeon Forge. Vacation Bible School will be held at Garvers Chapel Church, Cosby, June 4-7, with classes for all ages being offered. All are invited.
Piney Grove Baptist Church

Centerview Missionary Baptist Church
All are invited to a one-day Vacation Bible School at Centerview Missionary Baptist Church, Hwy. 160, on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The theme is “Fixer Upper: See What God Can Do.”
East TN Baptist Association
All Cocke County churches are invited to share in free packets of materials for your congregations to deliver throughout the community to spread the word of Christ. You can add a flyer or card with your church information to each packet. Every denomination is encouraged to join in this effort. Open Door Church
Members of Open Door Church in Reidtown will celebrate their church’s 100th anniversary at this year’s homecoming service on Sunday, May 26. Anyone having old photos of the church, its early members, and church events is asked to bring them to share. Members are looking for a picture of the original church building. Prayer meetings at Cocke County Courthouse

Parrottsville United Methodist Church has a clothes closet every Saturday from 9-12 in the church’s Fellowship Hall. Free clothes for all ages will be available. All are welcome. To schedule an appointment outside normal operating hours or for more information, call 423-623-5180.
Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church
The Chestnut Hill Clothes Closet, Dandridge, is open every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Free seasonal clothes will be available. Everyone is welcome.
Dandridge food pantry and thrift store
The Dandridge Ministerial Association food pantry, 910 Industrial Road, Dandridge, is open for emergency food on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. until noon. The thrift store is open Mondays—Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The store offers a wide variety of gently used, clean items for sale. A $5 bag sale of every day clothing is underway.
