High Oaks Coon Club St. Jude fundraiser

The annual High Oaks Coon Club BBQ fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is set for Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Edwina Community Center, located off Hwy. 73 (784 Ransom Circle), Newport. Pulled pork or chicken dinners, including three sides, drink, and dessert, will be sold for $10; cheeseburger plates, including drink and dessert, will be $7. Dinner will be served from noon until 6 p.m. (or until sold out). A horse shoe tournament starts at 10 a.m. and an auction at 5 p.m. Every dollar raised goes to St. Jude Research Hospital. Free legal services for Senior Citizens

Free legal services will be offered on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. to qualifying senior citizens. An attorney will be present to offer help with public benefits/healthcare, estate planning (wills and power of attorney), housing issues, consumer issues, and elder abuse/financial exploitation. To qualify, senior citizens must be at least 60 years old, a citizen/legal resident of USA, live in one of 26 counties in our service area, and have limited/low income. Commodity Distribution

Free food commodity distribution will be held Tuesday, Aug. 20, at National Guard Armory, Cosby, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. (closed 12:00—1:00 for lunch). Eligibility is determined at time of service. The commodities are only available for Cocke County residents. Recipients must bring one of the following to distribution: current Food Stamp card, proof of Families First, proof of SSI assistance, proof of public housing, proof of monthly household income, or proof of current LEAP assistance. Anyone picking up commodities for another person must have a signed permission slip. Slips may be picked up at Cocke County Neighborhood Center, 353 Driskill Circle, Newport, in advance. Medic Blood Needs

The MEDIC Regional Blood Center continues to have a critical need for O-positive, O-negative, and A-positive blood types. All eligible donors are encouraged to stop by one of MEDIC’s four centers or any blood mobile drive. This week’s donors will receive a chance to win a Fall Sports Package from UT, which includes a $250 gift card for UT sports as well as other football-related items.

CCHS Driving Permits

Cocke County High School is currently selling student parking permits at the school for eligible students. Any student who is a licensed driver and who plans to drive and park on campus will need to purchase a permit by Aug. 16, 2019. Students may come to the school Mondays—Fridays, from 9:00 a.m. until noon to do so. To purchase a permit, a student must present the following: a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, car license tag number along with make/model/year of vehicle(s) being driven. The permits are $15 each. Students becoming eligible to drive later in the school year may purchase their hang tag only after they become eligible to drive.

17th annual Shadow of the Mountains Show and Shine Car Show

The 17th annual Shadow of the Mountains Show and Shine Car Show will be Saturday, Aug. 17, at Newport City Park from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Sponsored by Good Times Cruiser Car Club, the event will be held rain or shine. Registration will be from 8:00 a.m. until noon for judging. Thirty awards will be given. The event is open to all makes and models. Entry fee is $20 with proceeds going to local charities. Community Baby Shower

The Cocke County Health Department will hold a Community Baby Shower and Breastfeeding Celebration on Friday, Aug. 23, from 1:00—3:00 p.m. at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, 234 Lincoln Ave., Newport, for all pregnant, new, and breastfeeding moms. Empower Cocke County

The Empower Cocke County “Buy the Pound” thrift store now has free Bibles and Christian literature, plus free children’s books and stuffed animals for any children. The store is open Thursday—Saturday from 10-3.

LIHEAP applications being accepted

Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authority, Inc. is accepting applications for the annual Energy Assistance program. Applicants must provide a printout from their energy vendor showing the usage charges for the last 12 months. Applicants may have applications mailed to them by calling 423-623-3066 or 423-318-6933. Applications may be mailed back to DCEA, P.O. Box 68, Newport, TN 37822 or turned in at the Douglas-Cherokee Neighborhood Service Center, 353 Driskill Circle, Newport, TN 37821.

DAV Open House/Service Hours

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 102, Pine St., holds Open House with coffee and fellowship Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until noon. Officers are available to discuss possible disability benefits on that day, plus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m.

Tai Chi Classes

New Tai Chi classes begin monthly. Contact instructor Rita Orick (423-487-2876) for times and locations. Classes are free and sponsored by Cocke County Office on Aging/Senior Center

Free meals for senior citizens

Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authority, Inc.’s Senior Nutrition Program offers free hot meals Mondays-Fridays at 11 a.m. at the Jones Building, 203 Bowman Dr. to those 60 or older or spouses of those age 60 or older.

Child/Adult Care Food Program

Telamon Corporation TN Head Start Program’s Bybee Center, 144 Bybee Road, Newport, participates in the Child and Adult Care Food Program. Meals will be provided at no separate charge to eligible children/adults without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability based on USDA Income Eligibility Guidelines effective July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020.
