Fun can be found at Joystick Gaming and Collectibles

NEWPORT—A new comic bookstore and video game shop recently opened in Newport. The store plans to host events, local celebrities and gaming tournaments to bring a new environment and growth to the area.

Brothers Ty and George Shute took over the space formally known as Game Knights on Cosby Highway. Now known as Joystick Gaming and Collectibles, the new store will keep most of the same theme as the prior one, but intends to enhance and expand upon what was previously offered.

“We want to offer a clean, safe environment where kids can come after school and enjoy the free wifi, game a little and just hang out. We are going to be offering drinks and snacks too,” Ty Shute said.

Besides providing a fun, safe environment for youth, the brothers are working on a list of local celebrity figures to invite for autograph signings, question and answer panels and photo opportunities.

Grand Opening

The store celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, October 26 and incorporated Halloween festivities into the event by hosting a costume contest and trick or treating. Shute says they want to have options for families and children in the area.

Fun can definitely be found inside the store. When customers walk in they are greeted by a wall full of video games for Playstation 4, Xbox and even Atari systems. Toys, hobbies, gaming systems and collectibles are spaced throughout as well.

A large back room is slowly being converted into a gamer’s paradise complete with multiple tv’s, gaming systems and a Mario mural. Once complete, the room will become the space for gaming tournaments and competitions to include Call of Duty and Pokemon.

Celebrity Hot Spot

Not missing a beat, the brothers have another event planned for this Saturday, November 3. Actor and artist Matthew Atchley, originally from Strawberry Plains, will be at the store from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to meet and greet and sign autographs.

Atchley has had roles in several shows and movies, including Ozarks, Snapped and will have his first major role in the upcoming Clint Eastwood directed film titled Richard Jewell which will be in theaters on December 13.

The actor will also have his artwork available for purchase.

Shute said Atchley’s manager reached out to them several weeks ago to schedule a signing. The Atchleys wanted to stop in to “give back to the community.” Atchley’s wife Leslie is a Newport native.

“It’s what we all want to see, it’s what we hope to do here at Joystick Gaming and Collectibles, bring growth and commerce to our town while offering a family friendly environment,”said Shute.
