NEWPORT— A motorcycle accident claimed the lives of two people Friday night on Highway 160, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

THP identified the victims as James Maples, 53, and Rachel Maples, 31, both of Newport.

On Friday, several first responders were dispatched to the 400 block of Highway 160 just before 10:30 p.m. concerning a single vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, THP Trooper Erick Gordon said he learned that the driver, James Maples, was negotiating a curve when he lost control of the 2016 Honda Goldwing motorcycle and struck a guardrail.

According to the report, the impact caused both riders to go airborne.

The motorcycle came to a rest off the roadway on the other side of the guardrail.

Mr. and Mrs. Maples were pronounced dead at the scene.

The report stated that the couple was wearing helmets, and it is unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.
