NEWPORT—A Newport man was charged with driving under the influence after police reports say he caused a vehicle accident at Ford’s Cruz Thru Saturday evening.
Capt. Stephen Higginbotham responded to the scene where he spoke with the victim, Destiny Hartsell, 27, who said she was sitting inside Ford’s Cruz Thru whenshe was struck by another vehicle, operated by Rodney C. McAlister, 55, Hiwassee Street.
According to the report, McAlister allegedly asked Hartsell not to call police, but she stated she had to for insurance purposes.
At that time, McAlister fled the scene before officers arrived.
McAlister was stopped a short time later on Cosby Highway.
Patrolman Will Garber came in contact with McAlister and could detect an odor of alcohol about McAlister’s person.
When McAlister was asked to step out of the vehicle, he became “belligerent”, the report stated.
No field sobriety tests were conducted due to McAlister’s behavior.
He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
