NEWPORT—A Newport couple is facing charges following a brief pursuit that ended in a vehicle crash on Scenic Drive Wednesday evening.
Cocke County Sheriff officials identified the couple as David M. Banks, 30, and Ashley Dawn Banks, 27, both of Summer House Hollow Road.
On Wednesday, Sgt. Max Laughter reported he and Captain David Robertson attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop after they observed a white Chrysler van operating with a broken taillight.
According to the report, the driver, identified as David Banks, did not stop and ran from deputies on Rock Hill Road.
Sgt. Laughter said Banks crossed the centerline multiple times and ran two vehicles off the roadway and into a ditch.
The pursuit continued onto Old Asheville Highway and East Highway 25/70.
As Banks made the turn onto Scenic Drive, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed the van into a tree.
David Banks, and Ashley Banks, who was a passenger, exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot from deputies but both were apprehended.
David Banks admitted to deputies that he was under the influence of methamphetamine.
He was charged with driving while license revoked, driving under the influence, violation of light law, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, evading arrest, and violation of financial responsibility.
Ashley Banks was charged with evading arrest.
