NEWPORT—A Michigan woman was arrested over the weekend for child abuse following an investigation.
Newport Police officers were dispatched to 1010 Cosby Highway, in reference to an unresponsive female on Friday, June 7.
Upon arrival, Patrolman Michael Robey spoke with Shawn Carpenter, who said as he went to check on Kayla D. Hill, 23, Roseville, MI, he noticed she would not answer the door.
As Carpenter looked through a window, he saw Hill passed out on the bed with her baby asleep on the other bed. Carpenter noted as he knocked on the window, the baby woke up and began crying and Hill did not wake up until Carpenter got inside the room.
Ptl. Robey spoke with Hill who said she allegedly took NyQuil and fell asleep.
According to the report, Carpenter advised officers that Hill got drunk and fell asleep.
Department of Children’s Services was then called to the scene. An employee asked Hill to consent to a drug screen and she complied. Hill tested positive for methamphetamine, THC, morphine, opiates, cocaine, and amphetamines.
The child was taken into State’s custody and Hill was arrested and charged with child abuse.
