NEWPORT—The Newport Police Department and The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services are investigating the death of an infant child, which occurred on Sunday July 7, 2019.

At approximately 2:30 am. Central Dispatch received a call requesting an ambulance to be sent to Motel 6 on Heritage Blvd. in Newport.

The caller advised that a child was not breathing and was non-responsive.

When Newport Police Officers arrived at the motel the child’s mother met them in the lobby with the child.

Newport Police Officer Brandon Cassady initiated CPR lifesaving efforts.

Officer Cassady continued to perform CPR until he was relieved by Emergency Medical Personnel from First Call EMS.

The infant was transported to Newport Medical Center where life saving efforts continued.

Unfortunately the infant was pronounced dead by medical personnel at approximately 3:30 a.m.

The child was 37 days old and was a resident of Beulaville, North Carolina.

On Monday July 8, 2019 an autopsy was performed on the infant at the Regional Forensic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

The preliminary autopsy did not reveal any physical trauma and officials say there does not appear to be any foul play involved in the child’s death.

The investigation is ongoing.
