A public awareness meeting about projected water intake and discharge on the Nolichucky River by U.S. Nitrogen will be held Saturday, May 17, at 7 p.m., at the Centerview Ruritan Club in Bybee.

Organizer Terry Dawson said the purpose of the "peaceful gathering" would be to make Cocke County citizens aware of the water intake and water discharge planned at the Nolichucky Bridge at Briar Thicket.

Dawson said some state-level representatives would be there to answer questions.

"We're not opposed to their factory," just the intake and discharge, Dawson said of the group called "Save the Nolichucky".

He also said "no violence will be allowed" at the meeting, which will have security present to make sure the meeting is an orderly, peaceful one.

Dawson emphasized that Centerview Ruritan Club, which is offering space for the meeting, is not taking sides on the controversial water intake and release.

The Ruritan Club is located at 103 Airport Road, in Bybee.

For more information, call Dawson at (423) 237-0481.
