NEWPORT—A Saturday evening vehicle pursuit netted the arrest of two men in Newport.
Newport Police Captain Brad Ball was patrolling Cosby Highway when he observed two vehicles speeding and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Capt. Ball said the two vehicles turned on Lakeview Street and continued toward Prospect Avenue.
According to the report, officers lost sight of one of the vehicles but continued to pursue a Nissan, operated by Jalen L. Pruitt, 21, Woodlawn Avenue.
The pursuit continued through Woodlawn Avenue, Riverview Street and Prospect Avenue where Pruitt was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Capt. Ball reported that Pruitt nearly struck two vehicles during the pursuit and “jumped” another vehicle that was sitting at a stop sign on White Oak Avenue.
Pruitt then pulled over and he and a passenger, identified as Joshton Fine, 22, surrendered to officers.
Upon making contact with Pruitt, officers detected an odor of marijuana about his person. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a baggie that contained .7 grams of marijuana.
Both Fine and Pruitt were placed under arrest.
Pruitt was charged with possession of schedule VI, speeding, fleeing to evade, disregard of stop sign, and reckless endangerment. Fine was charged with public intoxication.
