NEWPORT—A routine traffic stop netted the arrest of a Newport man after he was found in possession of drugs on Saturday, June 1.
Cocke County Sheriff deputy Joshua Matthews reported he conducted a traffic stop after he observed a male subject, later identified as Bruce Lee Hurst, 37, Cherry Brook Way, traveling at 85 mph in a 40 mph zone on Carson Springs Road.
Upon stopping the vehicle, Deputy Matthews came in contact with Hurst and two other occupants, identified as Jamie Garcia, 22, and Ashley Teague.
According to the report, Hurst and Garcia had active warrants for their arrest and were removed from the vehicle.
Deputy Matthews reported he obtained verbal consent to search the vehicle where he found several baggies of methamphetamine, heroin, Gabapentin, and Suboxone in Hurst’s belongings.
Hurst was charged with possession of schedule V, possession of schedule I, possession of schedule II, possession of schedule III, and violation of probation.
Garcia was served with an active outstanding warrant for violation of probation.
Both were arrested and transported to the Cocke County Jail Annex.
