Larry Burl Ottinger

Larry Burl Ottinger, age 83, of the Parrottsville community, died at the Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport after a major heart attack on the morning of March 14, 2019.

Burl was born February 16, 1936 and graduated from Parrottsville High School in 1954, after which he traveled to Washington, DC to work in the fingerprint division of the FBI. After two years, Burl returned to the family farm in the Salem Community and started a dairy business.

He said his marriage vows to the love of his life, Edna Moore, of Bybee, in 1960, and kept those vows for over fifty-eight years.

Burl was preceded in death by his father and mother, Miller and Tulon (Neas) Ottinger; by a brother, L.V. Ottinger; and two sisters, Imogene Schaefer and Geraldine McSween.

He is survived by his wife, Edna (Moore) Ottinger of Parrottsville; one daughter Lisa (Greg) Stephens; and one son Larry (Lisa) Ottinger. He was the loving “Pawy” to his grandchildren: Sydne Stephens, Gracie Ottinger, Jack Ottinger, Brian (Breanne) Stephens, and Landon (Nicole) Stephens. He was great-grandfather to Mason and Madelyn Stephens.

He is also survived by special nieces and nephews: Butch and Judy Ottinger, Susie and Steve Bullock, Lynda and the late Barry Fromm, Ted and Marcia Schaefer, Bob and the late Marilyn McSween, and Ed and Joan McSween.

There are several great-nieces and great-nephews who often traveled many hours to spend time with Uncle Burl and Aunt Edna and visit the farm which they all considered as a special home place.

We should not fail to mention all the many special friends who loved Burl; he will also be greatly missed by his faithful Australian Shepherd, “Molly”.

He was an active lifelong member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Greene County and the Men’s Sunday School Class and served on the Church Council and as its Chairman for several years.

Burl was an active member in the farming/dairy communities of both Cocke and Greene Counties.
