On behalf of the Board of Directors of Central Charities of Newport and Cocke County and the Bread Basket, I want to extend a heartfelt, but belated, thank you to Dr. David McConnell for his vital support to the Bread Basket, which has spanned decades.
The Bread Basket was formed in the early 1980s with the intent of providing emergency food, job referrals and other services to the people of Cocke County.
Dr. McConnell was on board with much needed assistance early on.
Decades ago, when the Bread Basket was housed in the old Tanner School Building, Dr. McConnell began paying the utility bill each month.
When the Bread Basket was relocated to the old Materials Center, he continued to pay the utility bill. Years later, The Family Practice Center purchased the Materials Center building.
Then the Bread Basket was housed rent free with the utilities continuing to be provided.
His assistance to the Bread Basket continues to this day.
Over the decades, the Bread Basket has provided emergency food to thousands of families.
We have been able to do that only because individuals, clubs and churches in Cocke County have been faithful in their support of the Bread Basket.
The Board wishes to express its thanks to Dr. McConnell and others for their generous support over the years.
Jerry McCurry, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Central Charities and the Bread Basket
