Elizabeth (Smith) Mathis, age 78, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center surrounded by her family.

She was a faithful member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Newport for nearly forty years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Albert (Johnny) Mathis; her parents John and Alma Smith; and grandson Logan Kencade Mathis.

She is survived by her son Kenneth E. (Debra) Mathis of Mobile, AL; daughter Sharon (Gary) Hartsell of Morristown; granddaughter Jennifer Hartsell (Gary) Stockdale of Franklin, TN; great-grandchildren: William and Lauren Stockdale of Franklin, TN; sister Jean Cureton of Newport; brothers Johnny Smith of Newport, Harold (Nan) Smith of Newport; sister Aileen (J. E.) Renner of Newport; and brother Jim (Kathy) Smith of Newport.

She also leaves behind many nephews, nieces, and special friends.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Elizabeth's lifetime of service and love from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2009, at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church with funeral services to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Craig Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, 234 Lincoln Avenue, Newport, TN 37821.
