Highway 25/70, Newport, on charges of first-offense DUI. $6,000 in wiring stolen from home Thursday, Dep. David Parton filled out an offense report made by Linda Michelle Engel, 52, 3154 Highway 321, Parrottsville, concerning the theft of approximately $6,000 worth of wiring from her home. 600 feet of copper wiring stolen Thursday, Dep. Brian Holt was dispatched to ACE Industries, 850 Industrial Road, Newport, on a call concerning the theft of roughly 600 feet of copper wire. Upon arrival, Holt spoke with an employee who stated that sometime between April 7 and April 24, someone broke into ACE Industries and stole the above-mentioned copper. The suspect(s) entered the building by removing a portion of the structure’s metal siding. The estimated value of the stolen copper is $15,000. Express backs into Nissan Thursday, Dep. Randall Hartsell was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident at the parking lot of Family Adventures off Hartford Road. According to the report, Gary Lee Houston, 59, 704 Edgewood Lane, Festus, Mo., backed his 2002 Chevrolet Express van into a 1990 Nissan owned by Ronald A. Patton, 62, 8027 Spruce Creek Place, Fort Wayne, Ind. Fallen tree causes wreck Thursday, Lt. Rick Laws was dispatched to a one-vehicle accident on Old Hartford Road. According to the report, Timothy Wayne Costner, 41, 3921 Lindsey Gap Road, Cosby, was traveling north on Old Hartford Road in his 2000 Chevrolet pickup when he came upon a large tree that had fallen across the roadway. Costner was unable to react in time to avoid hitting the tree head-on. Police Debit card missing, stolen? Thursday, Patrolman Ricky Parton filled out an incident report made by Amanda Varano, 18, 260 Filbert St., Newport, concerning the theft of or misplacement of her debit card. According to the report, Varano told Parton she went to Knoxville on April 15, and used her debit card. Varano later placed the card in the glove box of her boyfriend’s car. Varano said she was unable to find the card on April 24 after her mother reportedly placed $25 in her account. When Varano called her bank she was told she had a balance of $0. Attempted check fraud Thursday, Patrolman David Smith responded to a call made by employees of Check Express, 616 Cosby Highway, Newport, concerning a person who attempted check fraud. Upon arrival, Smith found an 18-year-old white female at the business who had reportedly attempted to cash a check in the amount of $1,250. An employee working at the business contacted Charles Schwab Bank to confirm the check was phony. Drink machines looted Thursday, Sgt. Scott Lamb responded to a call made by football coach Casey Kelley regarding the vandalism of four Coca Cola machines at the CCHS stadium. Upon arrival, Lamb observed the machines, which are believed to have been damaged Wednesday night. Lamb noted both the money receivers and front display pictures were damaged. Police were unable to determine the amount of money taken from the machines. The estimated value of the four machines is $8,000. Toyota’s collide Thursday, Patrolman Ricky Parton was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident on East Highway 25/70. According to the report, Randy Ledford, 52, 870 Barnett St., Newport, stated he was traveling west on East Highway 25/70 in his 2002 Toyota Tundra before approaching a 2004 Toyota Matrix driven by Maggie L. Meadows, 29, 555 Bonanza Drive, Newport. Ledford told Parton that Meadows had her left turn signal on near the intersection with Belton Avenue. Ledford said he drove around the right of Meadows’ vehicle in the emergency lane and she turned toward him, causing the vehicle’s to collide. Meadows stated she was attempting to turn right onto River Road when Ledford passed around her in the emergency lane causing the collision. Chevy and Dodge collide Wednesday, Patrolwoman Heather Lawson was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident on East Broadway. According to the report, Russell M. Moore, 23, 9 Shanna Drive, Apartment No. 1, Weaverville, N.C., was traveling west on East Broadway in a 2008 Chevrolet Uplander and failed to stop for the red light at the intersection of Bear Avenue and Broadway. Carolyn R. Johnson, 66, 135 Clifton Heights, Newport, was turning left from Bear Avenue onto East Broadway when her 2001 Dodge Intrepid was struck by the Uplander. Witnesses told police Moore’s vehicle had a red light. Hit-and-run near Jones Circle Thursday, Patrolman Derek Wright was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident on the Cosby Highway. According to the report, Robert S. Millsaps, 37, 899 Cherry St., Alcoa, was traveling west on Jones Circle in his 2002 Toyota Echo and was attempting to turn right onto the Cosby Highway when the driver’s-side front fender of his vehicle was struck by a silver-colored Toyota Camry.
