POLICE
Stolen vehicle recovered
On Monday, according to Patrolman Jason Smith, Corey
Buckner, 19, 586 North Street, left the keys in the ignition of his 1994
Pontiac Grand Am while he went inside Jabo's Pharmacy. When Buckner returned
minutes later, his vehicle was gone. It was later recovered off Caney Creek
Road in Cosby by Cocke County Deputy Derrick Webb.
Alleged assault leads to arrest
Craig Woods, 23, 434 Jimtown Road, faces multiple
charges following his arrest Monday by Sgt. Armondo Fontes. According to Sgt.
James Holt, Newport police department officers first responded to a report of
an alleged assault at 407 Buda Street. Upon their arrival, Anastasia O'Connell,
24, 337 Suncrest Apartments, said that Woods came to her residence, cursed her,
grabbed her by the neck, threw her to the ground, then fled the scene. Later
Cocke County Sheriff Department officers responded to a call to 432 Jimtown
Road regarding another alleged assault. Upon their arrival, according to Fontes'
report, they found Woods next to his mother's vehicle. As officers exited their
vehicle, Woods ran from officers who pursued him a short distance. When Woods
fell, officers struggled with him, before pepper spraying him. Woods now faces
charges of public intoxication, resisting arrest, and violation of the stop,
halt, and frisk law.
Weapons charges placed
Vernon Meadows, no age given, faces charges of
possession of a weapon with the intent to go armed following his arrest by
Patrol Officer Billy Woody on Monday. According to Woody, Meadows was a
passenger in a vehicle stopped during a traffic check. Woody and Policeman Rick
Stephenson discovered Meadows to have a .38 handgun in his right back pocket
and found another .38 in the car.
SHERRIF
Driver charged on Tuesday
Jennifer Campbell, 19, 2505 Moore Ridge Road, Bybee,
was charged by Cocke County Deputies Joseph Owings and Robert Thornton with
under age driving while impaired following their response to a wreck on Hwy.
160. According to officers, Campbell gave three different versions regarding
the cause of the accident and later failed all field sobriety tests.
Multiple charges placed
John Wayne Southerland, 20, 5035 Grand View Way,
Cosby, faces several charges following his arrest on Friday by Cocke County
Sheriff officers, whose report states that they answered a call regarding a
domestic assault with gun shots. Upon their arrival, officers say that they
found Southerland walking along the road in possession of a .45 loaded gun and
33 bullets in his pocket. Officers later found a pill bottle and a small amount
of marijuana in his possession. Southerland was charged with going armed with
the intent to go armed, carrying a gun on public property, simple possession of
marijuana, and reckless endangerment.
