NEWPORT-Amvets Post No. 75 will conduct its annual Memorial Day Service starting at 10:30 a.m. Monday on the Cocke County Courthouse lawn.
First Vice Commander Bob Sheldon said Cocke County High School NJROTC Senior Chief Mark Boesch will be the guest speaker for this year's event.
In addition, the CCHS NJRTOC students will again participate this year's ceremony. The Disabled American Veterans will provide a 21-gun salute and play TAPS, while Pastor Edward Young of First Free Will Baptist Church in Newport will do the invocation. Stan Barbee will play Amazing Grace on the bagpipes during Monday's ceremony.
In addition, Sheldon said numerous local, state and federal government leaders have been invited to speak including Newport Mayor Connie Ball, Cocke County Mayor Iliff McMahan Jr., state Rep. Eddie Yokley, U.S. Rep. Phil Roe and Fourth Judicial District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn.
Sheldon said Roe will not be able to attend due to a prior commitment in Washington, D.C.
Sheldon invites all active military personnel and local residents to attend Monday's service.
