Historic Bethesda Church, built in 1835 and used as a hospital during the Civil War, will be the setting for tours, displays, demonstrations, and discussions about the war and its effects on this area. On Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday, May 31, from 12-4 p.m., visitors will be treated to tours of the adjacent cemetery where nearly 100 soldiers, casualties of the Battle of Morristown and other area skirmishes, lie buried. The church, now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, still shows signs of damages inflicted by cannon balls during the battle. Tour guides, dressed in Confederate uniforms and other period costumes, will lead the tours and answer questions. Among the planned events are an infantry display, a cemetery walk, artillery display, and cannon firing demonstrations. A Civil War field hospital will be set up and a special medical demonstration is set for Saturday at 8 p.m. The event is free. Copyright © 2010, The Newport Plain Talk |
