NEWPORT-The Newport Rescue Squad's yearly fundraising events are scheduled for this weekend, June 13-14.

According to Captain Roger Nease, the squad's annual roadblock will be held between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13.

On Sunday, June 14, the squad's famous cookout, featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, bar-be-qued chicken, and pork chops will begin at 11 a.m. Food will be served at two locations: in the Wal-Mart parking lot and at the Rescue Squad's building, 111 Underwood Road. The cost will be $8 per plate.

Known as Rescue Squad Days, these activities constitute the organization's only fundraising efforts during the year.

Captain Nease also issued an invitation to anyone interested in becoming a squad member to call (423) 623-4450 or (423) 721-5510 or contact any squad member.

The Newport Rescue Squad was established over 50 years ago and devotes thousands of volunteer hours to the community each year in numerous ways ranging from assisting at local ballgames, fairs, and festivals to helping other emergency personnel at accident sites and in searches for missing persons.
