NEWPORT-"It is a proven fact: one in every eight women will be stricken with breast cancer."

With these words, Baptist Hospital of Cocke County Director of Radiology Janice Casey catches the attention of Cocke County women during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"This startling fact causes fear in the heart of every woman," Casey continues, "but a more optimistic fact is that if detected early, breast cancer can be successfully treated."

Baptist Hospital of Cocke County has joined the nationwide celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On Wednesday, October 7, the Women's Imaging Department will sponsor a community spaghetti luncheon from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the hospital dining room.

"For $5.00, you can purchase spaghetti, bread, and a fountain drink," said Casey, "with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society for the treatment of and research into breast cancer."

Also, on Tuesday, October 13, volunteers from Mercy Health Partners will be at BHCC providing free massages and bone density testing for all women who have screening mammograms that day. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (423) 613-1337.

Visitors to the hospital might also think Christmas has arrived early when the see a beautifully decorated tree in the Imaging Department.

However, the tree is decorated in the breast cancer awareness theme Memorial and honorarium cards for breast cancer victims and survivors are on sale and will be posted in the department.

"Mammography is the best way to detect breast cancer," said Casey. "It is imperative that every woman, in cooperation with her physician, receive a screening mammogram every year."
