(Last modified: 2009-11-19 09:29:53) Source: The Newport Plain Talk NEWPORT-There's nothing more exciting than elementary school basketball in Cocke County, and this past Monday, November 16, was no exception. Round 5 action on Monday had Bridgeport at Parrottsville, Northwest at home to Grassy Fork, Centerview playing at Cosby and Edgemont hosting Del Rio, which also included two junior varsity games.
(Girls) Grassy Fork 45 Northwest 11 The Lady Ravens jumped out to a 25-0 lead over the Lady Patriots in the first quarter and never looked back. The Lady Ravens led 34-2 at the break, 41-6 after three and coasted home to the 34-point victory. Dessie Shaffer had a game-high 11 points for the Lady Ravens while Alyssa Mitchell had six points to pace the Lady Patriots. Grassy Fork (45): Dessie Shaffer 11, Payton Johnson 8, Christian Evans 6, Katie Mae Lanzon 6, Brianna Whitted 4, Kristen Coggins 3, Jada Baxter 2, Kasey Ford 2, Wendy McGaha 2, Lauren McGaha 1. (Boys) Northwest 53 Grassy Fork 37 The Patriots blitzed the Ravens for a 16-5 first quarter lead, and refused to allow the Ravens back into the game. The Patriots led 27-17 at the break, 37-3 after three, and marched home with the 16-point victory. Kinsler Rea had a game-high 25 points for the Patriots while Keenan Phillips pumped in 10 points to lead the Ravens. Northwest (53): Kinsler Rea 25, Francisco Torres 11, Barren Pruitt 8, Chris Stevenson 2, Salvador Ortega 2, McKeal Nichols 2, Kyle Lane 2, Justin Eggen 1. Grassy Fork (37): Keenan Phillips 10, Luke Howell 6, Zachary Straughbaugh 6, Dakota Moore 4, Jordan Reid 4, Tristan Wilson 3, Cole Shephard 2, Coke Shelton 2.
(Girls) Cosby 39 Centerview 36 The Lady Eagles had the upper hand early, and managed to hold off a second half surge by the Lady Falcons. The Lady Eagles led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, and pushed their lead to 10, 22-12, at the break. But, the Lady Falcons made a push to get back into the game, cutting the Lady Eagle lead to five, 26-21, heading into the final quarter. But, the Lady Eagles stood firm over the final six minutes, and held on for the three-point victory. Tasha Ball had a game-high 19 points to lead the Lady Eagles while Hannah Burke had 15 points to lead the Lady Falcons. Cosby (39): Tasha Ball 19, Kailye Ball 7, Brooke Schreder 7, Kaylie Webb 4, Ivye Fine 2. Centerview (36): Hannah Burke 15, Hannah Miller 13, Leah Lewandowski 4, Brooke Holt 3, Kaitlynn Fine 1.
(Boys) Cosby 50 Centerview 37 The Eagles and Falcons had their talons out in the first half of this one, but the Eagles managed to pull away in the second half. The Eagles led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter, but the Falcons came back to lead 19-16 at the break. The Eagles flew out of the locker room to outscore the Falcons 23-6 for a 39-25 third quarter lead, and then coasted home with the 12-point victory. Jordan Carpenter had 15 points to lead the Eagles while Colin White had a game-high 16 points to lead the Falcons. Cosby (50): Jordan Carpenter 15, Derrick Norris 11, Brody Williams 10, Michael Kagel 7, Tyler Norris 4, Gage Reece 2, Jacob Hoover 1. Centerview (37): Colin White 16, Adam Lloyd 7, Kelby Hayes 6, Ryder Keedwell 4, Dylan Brockwell 2, Nick Myers 2.
(Girls) Bridgeport 40 Parrottsville 24 Both teams battled through the first half, but the Lady Rockets took off and left the Lady Parrotts in the third quarter. The Lady Rockets held a 13-5 first-quarter lead, but the Lady Parrotts pulled to within four, 19-15, at the break. The Lady Rockets exploded for 21 third-quarter points for a 40-20 lead, and cruised home with the 16-point victory. Alexis Williams had a game-high 12 points to lead the Lady Rockets while Ashley Wood had nine points to pace the Lady Parrotts. Bridgeport (40): Alexis Williams 12, Courenty Cox 10, Allison Frazier 7, Kaley burgess 7, Megan Finchum 4. Parrottsville (24): Ashley Wood 9, Cassie Holt 4, Elizabeth Walker 4, Abbie Ramsey 3, Tjara Reed 2, Katie Holt 2.
(Boys) Parrottsville 39 Bridgeport 32 Both teams were dead even heading into the final stanza with the Parrotts managing to pull away at the end. The Parrotts led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter but the Rocket pulled even 17-17 at the break. It was still tied at 27-27 at the end of three, but the Parrotts turned up the offense and tightened the defense over the final six minutes for a seven-point victory. Seth Lovell had 17 points to pace the Parrotts while Patrick Hurst had a game-high 23-points to lead the Rockets. Parrottsville (39): Seth Lovell 17, Ike Rouleau 10, Jerick Varner 5, Ty Chatman 5, D.J. Holt 2. Bridgeport (32): Patrick Hurst 23, Clint Ramsey 5, Austin Ford 2, Stoney Bohannon 2.
(Girls) Edgemont 58 Del Rio 17 The defending champion Lady Panthers pounced on the Lady Trojans early. The Lady Panthers led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter and 31-8 at the break. The Lady Panthers kept up the pace, leading 46-17 after three and then trotting home with the 41-point victory. Bethanie Williams had a game-high 14 points to lead the Lady Panthers while Autumn Stokley had eight points to lead the Lady Trojans. Edgemont (58): Bethanie Williams 14, Sharina Cofield 12, Erika Fine 7, Ashley Green 6, Ashley Hayes 5, Delessa Stewart 4, Taylor Thornton 4, Makayla Valentine 4, Abigail Chambers 2. Del Rio (17): Autumn Stokley 8, Emily Stinson 4, Jaycie Langston 3, Kendra Wilds 2.
(Boys) Edgemont 56 Del Rio 39 The Panthers jumped out to a big early lead, and held the Trojans at bay the rest of the night. The Purple Panthers led 23-6 at the end of the first quarter and 27-17 at the break. The Panthers led 43-27 after three and coasted home with and 17-point victory. Blake Clark had a game-high 24-points to pace the Panthers while Raiden Worley had 13 points to lead the Trojans. Edgemont (56): Blake Clark 24, Kimbel Thornton 11, Chandler Duckett 11, Kordel Stewart 6, J.J. Benjamin 2, Michael Hood 2. (Girls JV) Edgemont 39 Del Rio 19 The Lady Panthers were a step above the Lady Trojans in the girl's JV contest with the Lady Panthers pulling away for the 20-point victory. Taylor Thornton had a game-high 12 points to lead the Lady Panthers while Angel Mayes had five points to lead the Lady Trojans. Edgemont (39): Taylor Thornton 12, Makayla Valentine 11, Sharina Cofield 6, Bethanie Williams 3, Delessa Stewart 2, Alyssa James 2, Abigail Chambers 2, No. 32 1. (Boys JV) Edgemont 48 Del Rio 11 The Panthers were way too much for the Trojans in this one, cruising home with a 37-point victory. Brendon Mantooth had a game-high 14 points to pace the Panthers while Thomas Smallwood had seven points to lead the Trojans. Round 6 tonight will have Parrottsville traveling to Northwest, Centerview at home to Smoky Mountain, Cosby visiting Edgemont and Grassy Fork hosting Del Rio, which will also include Girl's JV at 5 p.m. Girl's varsity tips at 6 p.m., followed by boy's varsity.
