NEWPORT-The action was fast and furious this past Thursday night as Cocke County's elementary school basketball teams battled in Round 6 of their schedule. This past Thursday had Parrottsville playing at Northwest, Centerview hosting Smoky Mountain, Edgemont at home to Cosby and Del Rio at Grassy Fork.

This was a battle between two very good teams this season, but the Lady Falcons were up to the task on their home court. The Lady Falcons led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter, 28-15 at the break, 41-22 after three and coasted home with the 13-point victory. Hannah Miller had a game-high 26 points to lead the Lady Falcons while Miranda Williams had 13 points to lead the Lady Bears.

Centerview (48): Hannah Miller 26, Leah Lewandowski 15, Hayley Miller 3, Kaylee Reed 2, Hannah Burke 2.

Smoky Mountain (35): Miranda Williams 13, Cyara Williams 11, Kaitlyn McReynolds 5, Harley Gregg 4, Alpha Parton 2.

The Smoky Bears were way too much for the Falcons on this night. The Smoky Bears lumbered off to a 16-6 first quarter lead, and made it 36-13 at the break. The Smoky Bears held the Falcons scoreless in the third quarter and led 56-13, and ambled home with the 44-point victory. Max Weeks had a game-high 15 points to lead the Smoky Bears while Colin White had nine points to lead the Falcons.

Smoky Mountain (65): Max Weeks 15, Jordan Self 11, Justin Shelton 8, Jacob Grooms 8, Cody Valentine 6, Jackie Gibson 6, Lucas Weeks 6, Dereck Weeks 5.

The Lady Panthers grabbed the early lead, and then snuck away from the Lady Eagles. The Lady Panthers led 10-5 at the end of the first quarter and 22-9 at the break. The Lady Panthers held a 33-14 lead at the end of the third quarter and cruised home with the 34-point victory. Ashley Green had a game-high 17 points to lead the Lady Panthers while Tasha Ball had seven points to lead the Lady Eagles.

Edgemont (51): Ashley Green 17, Bethanie Williams 13, Delessa Stewart 10, Taylor Thornton 5, Sharina Cofield 3, Makayla Valentine 2, Erika Fine 1.

The Purple Panthers and Eagles went toe-to-toe in this one. The Panthers took a 16-9 first quarter lead, but the Eagles cut the Panther lead to one, 19-18, at the break. The Panthers surged ahead by six, 32-26, at the end of three and held hone for the seven-point victory. Michael Hood had a game-high 14 points to pace the Panthers while Jordan Carpenter had eight points to lead the Eagles.

Edgemont (39): Michael Hood 14, Kimbel Thornton 7, Chandler Duckett 4, J.J. Benjamin 4, Kordel Stewart 4, Blake Clark 4, Jesse Loveday 2.

It was a sentimental night as Grassy Fork honored past principals Martha Lowe Shelton, Jim Strange and Jack Sheppherd. The homestanding teams made their former principals proud by sweeping the Trojans. The Lady Ravens jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead on the Lady Trojans and never looked back, leading 27-11 at the break, 36-14 after three and coasting home with the 32-point victory. Dessie Shaffer had a game-high 21 points for the Lady Ravens while Autumn Stokely had 13 points to lead the Trojans.

Grassy Fork (49): Dessie Shaffer 21, Peyton Johnson 11, Wendy McGaha 9, Julie McGaha 4, Keitlyn Thompson 2, Katie Mae Lanzon 2.

Del Rio (17): Autumn Stokely 13, Jayce Langston 2, Kendra wilds 2.

The Grassy fans left smiling as their Ravens completed the sweep. The Ravens and Trojans fought toe-to-toe early on, with the Ravens leading 6-4 at the end of the first quarter and 17-10 at the break. But, lifted off on offense in the second half, leading the Trojans 30-15 after three and soaring home with the 27-point victory. Thomas Edwards had a game-high 16 points to lead the Ravens while Hunter Phillips had eight points to lead the Trojans.

Grassy Fork (46): Thomas Edwards 16, David Moore 11, Dakota Moore 7, Zachery Strausbaugh 4, Keenan Phillips 4, Cole Shepherd 2, Andy Hogan 2.

Del Rio (19): Hunter Phillips 8, Jason Campbell 4, Blake Daniels 3, Raiden Worley 2, Thomas Smallwood 2.

 

The Parrottsville at Northwest game information was unavailable at press time.

 

Elementary school squads resume action on Monday, November 23, before taking a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday. On the schedule Monday is Del Rio at Northwest, Grassy Fork at home to Cosby and Centerview at Bridgeport, all starting with girl's varsity at 6 p.m. Smoky Mountain will be playing at Edgemont in a day game that will tip at 9:30 a.m. Also Monday, Newport Grammar plays at Bulls Gap, which also includes a boy's junior varsity game, which tips at 5 p.m.
