Alleged assault leads to arrest

Craig Woods, 23, 434 Jimtown Road, faces multiple charges following his arrest Monday by Sgt. Armondo Fontes. According to Sgt. James Holt, Newport police department officers first responded to a report of an alleged assault at 407 Buda Street. Upon their arrival, Anastasia O'Connell, 24, 337 Suncrest Apartments, said that Woods came to her residence, cursed her, grabbed her by the neck, threw her to the ground, then fled the scene. Later Cocke County Sheriff Department officers responded to a call to 432 Jimtown Road regarding another alleged assault. Upon their arrival, according to Fontes' report, they found Woods next to his mother's vehicle. As officers exited their vehicle, Woods ran from officers who pursued him a short distance. When Woods fell, officers struggled with him, before pepper spraying him. Woods now faces charges of public intoxication, resisting arrest, and violation of the stop, halt, and frisk law.
