NASHVILLE (AP)-Tennessee law enforcement agencies will focus on aggressive and impaired drivers on U.S. Route 70 going into the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

State troopers and local city and county police will focus on the east-west route that runs from the Tennessee-North Carolina border to the Mississippi state line at Memphis, paralleling Interstate 40.

The crackdown, known as "Safe 70," will begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday and continue for 12 hours.

Kendell Poole, who directs the Tennessee Governor's Highway Safety Office, said about 70 percent of all traffic deaths occur in rural areas.
