A Newport native was among 58 people statewide selected to serve on state boards and commissions.

Beulah C. Oldham, of Clarksville, the daughter of Bessie and Andrew Thomas, of Newport, has been appointed to the Advisory Council for the Education of Students With Disabilities, according to a news release from Gov. Phil Bredesen.

The council monitors progress in programs serving children with disabilities and issues an annual report.

"I am very pleased these 58 men and women have agreed to serve our state through its boards and commissions," Bredesen said. "I am confident that each of them brings the skills, experience and knowledge required to become valuable members of their respective boards and commissions, and Ivalue their commitment and willingness to the state of Tennessee."
