NASHVILLE (AP)-Tennessee transportation
officials promise an open road ahead for Fourth of July travelers.
TDOT is halting all road construction at 6 a.m.
Thursday and it won't resume until after midnight July 6.
Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely said
officials don't want travelers sitting in work zones with gasoline cost at a
record high.
Officials caution some lane reductions will remain and
reduced speed limits in them still apply.
The Triple-A affiliate Auto Club South expects highway
travel nationwide to be down fractionally this year under 2007, but more than
694,000 Tennessee residents are expected to travel by car sometime over the
holiday weekend.
Motorists can dial 511 from their cellular telephones
for travel information from TDOT.
