NEWPORT--American Legion Post 41 plans a flag burning service and ceremony for 6 p.m., Veteran's Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the Memorial Building.

According to Willie Green, the community is invited to bring flags being retired from service to him at Newport Printing and Office Supply, 315 East Broadway.

"We will ensure the flags are properly disposed of," said Green. "Anyone who has a worn flag needing to be disposed of should bring it to me, and we will take care of it."

Green said he has already collected several flags from local residents.

He said following the flag burning service, there will be an open house so visitors can see the progression of Memorial Building renovations.

Discussing the renovations, Post 41 Commander Frank Strickler said 16 more windows are needed for the building. Windows can be purchased for $500 each. A plaque in honor of or in memory of someone will be placed underneath the window.

"We are pleased that out of 106 windows in the building, we need only 16 more," said Strickler. "We thank the community for their support in this effort."

In addition to the windows, contributions are also being accepted for paint, the repair of the columns on the front of the building, two double glass doors for the front of the building, and two fire exit doors for the side of the building, Green said.

"Renovations are continuing and we need the continued support of the community," said Green.

Both Green and Strickler said they are pleased with the progress of the renovations.

To make a contribution, to volunteer to assist with renovating the building, or for information about the flag burning ceremony, call Frank Strickler at (423) 623-5339 or Willie Green at (423) 623-3651.
