MORRISTOWN--Walters State Community College's Center for Workforce Education will host a Job Loss Survival Workshop at 10 a.m. on Feb. 18 in the Clifford H. "Bo" Henry Center for Business and Technology on the Morristown campus. There is no charge to attend, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling Connie O'Vercum at (423) 318-2341.
The Center, in cooperation with the Tennessee Career Centers at Morristown and Talbott, holds frequent workshops for job seekers, but this one will not just focus on finding a job. The session will provide valuable information and assistance in dealing financially and emotionally with a job loss.
"So many in our area have lost their jobs and, for many, this is the first time they've been unemployed. We want people to know not only about the help we can provide in finding a job, but about other forms of assistance they may need," said O'Vercum, interim director of the Center.
A representative from the Department of Human Services will talk about the qualifications and process to apply for governmental assistance in food and other areas. A representative from East Tennessee Legal Aid will offer advice on dealing with collection agencies or bill collectors.
Those attending the workshop will leave with a Job Loss Survival Kit. Items in this kit will range from resume writing tips to fliers on insurance coverage.
A representative from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce
Development will begin the workshop by discussing unemployment benefits.
Then, O'Vercum will talk about all the services available through Tennessee Career Centers. Career counseling and job training may be available. The centers are also serve as a one-stop shop for job seekers, housing a variety of services under one roof.
