NEWPORT-Newport's Jimmy Owens was all
set to run the Talladega Short Track on Saturday night in a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event,
but headed to Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap instead as the Talladega event was rained out.
The Talladega race will be rescheduled later.
At
Bulls Gap, Owens did not start, and instead, headed back to Newport to get ready for a very busy
week.
Owens and the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will visit Cleveland
Speedway tonight for the Car Smart Race for Juvenile Diabetes event, which will pay $7,000 to
win.
Fans will also be able to bid on rides with Jimmy Owens, the "Newport
Nightmare." Owens, fresh off his $100,000 win of the Dream at Eldora Speedway, will be giving the
winning bidders a taste of Late Model racing as he takes them for a number of fast laps around the
3/8s mile clay oval in the Cleveland Speedway Driving School two seat Late Model.
All the proceeds from the drawings, the ride auctions and other donations will
be going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. At the JDRT, more
than 85% of their expenditures directly support research and research-related education.
On the racing side, the 40-lap Lucas Oil event will pay $7,000 to the winner.
The fast qualifier will pick up $200 from Murphy Glass and Mirror in Murphy, North Carolina. The
race will be the fourth race of the seven-race Summer Sizzler Tour 09. The series will race seven times
at seven different racetracks in 10 days.
Also on the night's racing card
will be a $1,500 to win Crate Late Model race and a regular A-Hobby feature.
The pits will open at 3 p.m., the grandstands at 5 p.m. Grandstand admission is
$20 with kids 6 to 11 $3. Under six are free.
The track is located on US
Hwy 11 (Lee Highway) just north of the US 64 bypass in Cleveland.
Following his run at Cleveland
tonight, Owens and his crew will be off to Swainsboro Raceway in Swainsboro, Georgia onThursday
night, Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Carolina on Friday night and Fayetteville Motor Speedway
in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Saturday night. All three races are Lucas Oil Series events with
Swainsboro and Gaffney each paying $7,000 to win and Fayetteville putting up a $10,000 winner's
paycheck.
