Bible takes Week 4 of Football Contest

NEWPORT-It was another knock-down-drag-out week in the Newport Plain Talk Football Contest.

This past week, six of our contestants went an amazing 9-1, which sent us to the tiebreaker, the Tennessee-Florida game. Hey, the Vols gave the Gators all they could handle with many pundits calling for a Florida blowout. The Gators won it 23-13, certainly not a blowout. And, with 36 total points, John David Bible comes away the winner, missing total points by a mere one.

As our Week 4 winner, John David will get a $10 gift certificate from Pizza Plus, located at 733 Cosby Highway in Newport, and one free movie rental compliments of Movie Time Video, located at 150 East Broadway in Newport.

On the high school level, Cosby picked up their first victory of the season. The Eagles win their homecoming game big over Hancock county 40-7, while Sevier County remains undefeated with a 47-6 victory over Cocke County. Jefferson County came up with their first victory of the season, 7-6 over Seymour, while Greeneville rolled past South Greene 59-29. And, Grainger dumped Chuckey-Doak 22-6. On the college level, only one contestant picked Washington over Southern California. The Huskies upended the Trojans 16-13. Only one contestant picked Texas Tech to upend Texas, but it didn't happen as the Longhorns prevailed 34-24. The other games picks were mixed as Oregon downed Utah 31-24 while Cincinnati remained undefeated with a 28-18 win at Oregon State.

Finishing at 9-1 this was week were John David Bible, Frank Bible, Evelyn B. Webb, Cody Lowe, Charles Henderson and Betty McAndrew.

Finishing at 8-2 this past week were Tim Edwards, Clinton Provencal, Ken Hall, Matt Whaley, Jackson Presnell, Rickie Jones, Adam Lovell, Kyal Clevenger, Mike Butler, Darrin Costner, Jody Lowe, Matt Reid, Billy Massengill, A.C. Willis, Keith Holcomb, Austin Ford, Cheyenne Kelley, Clint Ramsey, Kenny Cody, Diana Grooms, Eric R. Baxter, Jewell Ottinger, Terry Quinton, Craig Wild and Robert Gray.

Finishing at 7-3 this past week were Ronnie Leatherwood, Herb Thomas, Kevin Halcomb, Regina Lindsey, Rob Amick, LuAnn Meadows, Ronnie D. McGaha, Jimmy Don Jones, Herbie Keller, Tommy V. Lillard, Jr., Jordan Strange, Justin Kickliter, Cody Hembree, Beverly Coakley, Mitch Coakley, Julie Souder, David Kickliter, Jason Martin, Hank Douglas, Sr., Barbara Toby, David Shelton and Dana Bible.

Finishing at 6-4 this past week were Caleb Whaley, Brian Holt, Mike Benson, James Roth, D.K. Elliott, John Jenkins, Ginger Ann Hartsell, Tracy Williams, Rachel Allen, Morgan Hall, Marty Coakley, Derrick Webb, Karen Fraley and Walter Cole.

Finishing at 5-5 this past week were David Williamson, Billy Roberts, Bill Templin and Justin Shelton.

Finishing at 4-6 this past week were Mark Sandburg, Angie Templin and Dione Kyker.

And, finishing at 3-7 this past week was Angie Wills.

Keep on playing the contest week after week. You never know what may happen during the season, just like this past week, and overall records will be up-and-down week after week.

Our overall winner at the end of the season will be presented the Grand Prize, one cinema party for the winner and 19 friends or family members from Newport Cinema 4, located at 424 Heritage Blvd. in Newport. This includes a movie complete with popcorn and drinks for the 20 attendees.

The runner-up at the end of the season will receive a portable DVD player from Movie Time Video, located at 150 East Broadway in Newport.

The third-place finisher will receive a $50 gift certificate from Poe's Sport Center, located at 160 Highway 25-E in Newport.

The fourth-place finisher will win a $50 gift certificate Dazzler's Diamond Showroom, located at 503 Cosby Highway in Newport.

The fifth-place finisher will win one night's lodging at any Motel 6, in Newport, located at 225 Heritage Blvd.

And, the sixth-place finisher will get a quick lube, oil and filter courtesy of Stinnett's, located at 1041 West Highway 25/70 in Newport.

Week 5's Football Contest is located on Page 16A today. On the contest entry form, found in the middle of the page, simply chose which team you think will win, what you think the final score will be, which will be used for tiebreakers, and from what sponsor's ad you found the match-up in.

Once you've completed the entry form, simply clip it out, and drop it by The Plain Talk, or mail it to The Newport Plain Talk, Football Contest, 145 East Broadway, Newport, TN. 37821. Please make sure you include your address and telephone number so we can get in touch with you if you are our winner.

There are come great games for you coming up this weekend on both the college and high school levels.

On the high school level, Cocke County plays at Union County while Cosby plays at Chuckey-Doak. Grainger is at home to Pigeon Forge while Tennessee High visits Greeneville. And Cloudland will host Happy Valley. On the college level, Tennessee returns home to host Ohio while Louisville plays at Utah. Florida visits Kentucky while Clemson is at home to TCU and North Carolina travels to Georgia Tech.
