Theft over $1,000 results in arrest Joshua Everett Cole, 30, of 554 Freeman St., in Newport, was arrested Saturday, Oct. 17, and charged with theft over $1,000, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported. A warrant alleged that Cole took a 1998 Honda without the owner's permission.
Theft over $500 Stewart William Brown, 26, of 468 Johnson St., in Newport, was arrested Friday, Oct. 16, and charged with theft over $500, Det. Derrick Woods reported. Brown allegedly took an ATM card from Shirley Brown and used the card to get a total of $635.65.
Domestic assault charge and arrest Billy Edwin Hall, 34, of 117 Loftis Road, was arrested Sunday, Oct. 18, and charged with domestic assault, with regard to an incident with his sister.
Accident on McGaha Chapel Road Scottie Gilliam, 29, of 3175 Bogard Road, in Cosby, was allegedly traveling too fast, in a 1996 Honda, turning westbound from Bogard Road onto McGaha Chapel Road, when his vehicle traveled across the road, into a ditch, back onto the road, and struck a 2002 Nissan XTE traveling eastbound on McGaha Chapel Road, on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6:40 a.m., Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.
Driver flees accident scene on foot An unidentified driver involved in an accident on Highway 321, at Caney Creek Road, on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 p.m., apparently left the scene of an accident on foot that involved a 1995 Saturn owned by Christine M. Pruitt, of 271 Senior Way, in Newport, Deputy Sheriff C. J. Ball reported.
Vehicles strike deer on Interstate 40 Clayton Seals, 58, of 1318 Gillespie St., said he was traveling east on Interstate 40 at mile marker 436 on Sunday, Oct. 18, at about 9 p.m., when he struck a deer that crossed the interstate. Damage to the 2006 GMC Rollback was estimated at $4,000, Deputy Sheriff Travis Webb reported. A few minutes later, Douglas Clint Siegel, of Asheville, struck the deer in the road, causing severe undercarriage damage to his 2001 Volkswagen, which was towed to Siegel's home, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported.
Three charges in arrest Angela Renne Sutton, 27, of 275 Deer Foot Road, in Cosby, was arrested Sunday, Oct. 18, and charged with violation of probation, robbery, and theft over $1,000, based on outstanding warrants, Sgt. Ricky Holt reported.
Air compressor reported stolen Mary Sutton, 49, of Deerfoot Road, in Cosby, said that on Sunday, Oct. 18, between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m., someone broke into her storage trailer and stole a red air compressor and five hoses that go with the compressor, Deputy Sheriff C. J. Ball reported. The items are valued at about $600.
Vehicle reported stolen Chastity Laraissa Lane, 28, of Green Forest Road, in Cosby, said that someone stole her 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer, valued at about $12,000, on Sunday, Oct. 18, Deputy Sheriff C. J. Ball reported.
Vehicle forced off the road Irene Medford, 37, of Angel Way, in Newport, reported that she was traveling on Wright Road on Friday, Oct. 16, when a white Ford F-250 pickup truck was on her side of the road, causing her to travel into a ditch. The undercarriage of her 2002 PT Cruiser suffered about $500 in damage, Deputy Sheriff C. J. Ball reported. The accident was not reported for six and one-half hours.
Purse stolen from vehicle Alicia Gilliam, 34, of Fox and Hound Way, in Newport, said that some time between Friday, Oct. 16 and Sunday, Oct. 18, someone stole her purse from her vehicle. She said it had $350 in cash in it, Sgt. Ricky Holt reported.
Break-in and theft reported Alan McGarvey, 68, of Taylor Road, in Smyrna, Fla., said that sometime between Aug. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 18, someone broke into his home on Bogard Road, in Newport, and stole several items, including an MTD 18 horsepower riding lawn mower he valued at $1,000, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.
Did burglar(s) spend the night in home they broke into? Ronald J. Brennhofer, 72, of Mountain Creek Road, in Cosby, said on Monday, Oct. 19, that he had not been to his home, which is up for sale, for three months. He said a burglar, or burglars, entered his home. He said he noticed the bedding on of the home's beds was not as he last saw it. He said it appeared the burglar(s) stayed overnight because there were candles that had been lit so they could see in the house that had no electricity, Sgt. Tony Whitten reported. Stolen was a 42-inch flat screen TV valued at $1,600, and a 20-inch flat screen TV valued at $500.
Theft reported Buebell Holt, 49, of Lakeshore Drive, in White Pine, reported that someone took several items from his property on Saturday, Oct. 17, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported. Items stolen included two Snapper riding mowers, valued at $600, two push mowers ($300), and vehicle parts, worth a total of $2,150.
Aggravated burglary/theft over $1,000 Allen M. Dyer, 82, of Joe Reed Road, in Bybee, reported that on Thursday, Oct. 15, someone broke a rear sliding glass door to his home and stole a Beretta 22-caliber pistol (valued at $400), miscellaneous jewelry ($400), and other items. The total value of stolen items is $1,530, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported.
Parked vehicle destroyed by fire Tyrone R. Fine, 47, of Epley Road, in Newport, reported that his 1997 Ford Explorer was found engulfed in flames on Sunday, Oct. 18. A utility trailer with a 23 horsepower Huskee riding mower on it were also damaged in the fire, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported. The Explorer is valued at $1,500, the trailer at $300, and the riding mower at $2,500. Fine did not have auto insurance, he said.
Aggravated burglary/theft over $1,000 Unavee Fowler, 87, of Bruners Grove Road, in Parrottsville, said someone broke into her home on Friday, Oct. 16, and stole several jewelry items at a total value of $4,530. A broken window was valued at $150, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported.
Aggravated burglary/theft over $1,000 Edward Williams, 65, of Carson Springs Road, in Newport, reported that someone broke into his home on Sunday, Oct. 18, and stole four guns and damaged a window screen, bedroom door, and ceiling fan, at a total value of $1,360, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported.
Theft on Clay Hill Road Stanley Sutton, 58, of Clay Hill Road, in Newport, said someone entered his home on either Thursday, Oct. 15, or Friday, Oct. 16, and stole a Zenith TV valued at $100, and a converter box valued at $50, Deputy Sheriff David Parton reported.
Break-in and theft in Parrottsville James Hux, 35, of Scott Pond Road, in Parrottsville, said someone broke into his home, which he discovered on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 11:30 p.m., when he returned home, Deputy Sheriff Alton Cureton reported. Items stolen included jewelry, guns and electronic equipment. Among the items reported stolen was a white gold ring set valued at $3,500.

Public intoxication arrest Jay S. Nagle, 38, of 410 9th St., in Newport, was arrested Monday, Oct. 19, and charged with public intoxication, Capt. James Holt reported.
Resisting stop, halt, frisk, and theft under $500 Christopher J. Smith, 31, of 411 White Oak Ave., in Newport, was arrested Sunday, Oct. 18, and charged with resisting stop, halt, frisk, and theft under $500, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.
Vandalism reported Heather Leigh Fox, 25, of Woodlawn Ave., said someone vandalized her 1992 Oldsmobile, which she noticed when she returned home after midnight on Monday, Oct. 19, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.
Counterfeit money Scott Shelton, 36, of Valley View Drive, in Newport, tried to use a counterfeit $100 bill at the Gas 'N Go at Food City East, on Monday, Oct. 19, to make a purchase, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported. Shelton said he was not aware that the money was counterfeit, which he said he had just received from a person he knows.
Counterfeit money and theft under $500 Tom Whitaker, of Save-A-Lot on the Cosby Highway, said an employee on Sunday, Oct. 18, accepted two counterfeit $100 bills and gave the man change, and did not charge for three items be bought, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.
Vandalism/theft under $500 Jess Waltman, of Disabled American Veterans & Auxiliary at 148 Pine St., in Newport, said sometime between Saturday, Oct. 17, and Monday, Oct. 19, someone tried to set a plastic table on fire, threw trash on the front porch, and stole four steel guardrails, each five-feet long, at a total value of $205, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.
Breaking and entering/theft over $500 Chuck Holt, one of the workers on a Habitat For Humanity home-building project on Lake View Road, said someone stole a 40-gallon water heater from the home under construction, valued at $400, Sgt. Jason Smith reported.
Theft under $500 Beulah Gregory, 71, of Alex Street, in Newport, said a person she knows stole several items from her home sometime between Saturday, Oct. 17, and Monday, Oct. 19, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported. The items included three Shrek DVD's ($39), a Hamilton Beach grill ($30), and a DVD and radio combination ($50).
Counterfeit dollar bills Cathy Bugg, of Food City East, at 416 Eastern Plaza, in Newport, said she found an envelope that had "Fake One's" written on it. Two counterfeit $1 bills were in the envelope, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.
Gas drive-off Lindsey Smith, of Murphy USA 6574, at 1077 Cosby Highway, in Newport, reported that someone pumped gas and drove off without paying for it, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported. The amount of gas stolen was $35.31.
Accident in Walmart parking lot Bonnie Sue Venerable, 62, of Layman Way, in Parrottsville, said she was driving straight down a row in the parking lot of Walmart in a 1993 Ford MLX, on Saturday, Oct. 17, when a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Eddie E. Templin, 69, of Indian Creek Road, in Dandridge, struck her vehicle, causing minor damage to both vehicles, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.
Accident on Highway 25/70 Billy S. Fine, 74, of Middle Creek Road, in Cosby, said that on Friday, Oct. 16, he was driving a 1999 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, made a left turn onto Highway 25/70, and struck a 1998 Buick LeSabre driven by Willie M. Black, 80, of Fairfield Drive, Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported.
Accident on Cosby Highway at Epley Road Mary H. Henry, 73, of 7108 Glenfield Lane, in Chattanooga, said she was traveling north on Cosby Highway at Eply Road on Sunday, Oct. 18, when she was unable to stop in time and rear-ended a 2007 Chevrolet HHR driven by Mary F. Whaley, 46, of 2557 Lower Clift Road, in Newport, Patrolman Ricky Parton reported.
Accident on Cosby Highway at Jones Circle Rhonda M. Varmer, 38, of 137 Wind Song Drive, in Parrottsville, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet on Cosby Highway at Jones Circle, on Monday, Oct. 29, when her foot slipped off the brake pedal, and her vehicle struck a 2000 GMC pickup truck driven by Harlon W. Holland, 61, of 17548 Bullard Drive, in Newport, Capt. Ronnie Landers reported.
Accident on Highway 25/70 A 1997 Mercury driven by Glenn Keller, 81, of 245 East Mineral St., in Newport, and a 1983 Chevrolet Blazer driven by John Hanson, 17, of 2507 Highway 321, in Parrottsville, on Highway 25/70 at Hedrick Blvd., collided on Friday, Oct. 16, Sgt. Jason Smith reported.
Accident in Sagebrush Restaurant parking lot A 2008 Dodge pickup truck driven by Marcus Alan Johnson, 29, of 32 Motley Farm Road, in Providence, N.C., pulled into the parking lot of the Sagebrush Restaurant on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when the back tire of a trailer attached to the Dodge hit the front of a parked 2003 Toyota Tundra pickup truck owned by Gary Lee Hagerman, of 1548 Hannon Road, in Newport, Patrolman Billy Woody reported. No one was in the Toyota at the time of the collision.
Accident in Eastern Plaza parking lot Robin Lee Finchum, 57, of Blue Mill Road, in Del Rio, went to the Newport Police Department on Saturday, Oct. 17, to report a car crash. Finchum said she backed a 1998 Jeep SPC owned by William L. Finchum Jr. into a vehicle parked near the Ruble Barber Shop in the Eastern Plaza parking lot. Finchum reportedly said the other driven did not want a police report because they did not have insurance on their Cadillac Escalade, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.
