MARYVILLE-It was the first road test for the Cosby Eagles
and Lady Eagles this past Tuesday night, and both teams took care of business.
The Lady Eagles (2-0) placed four players in double
figures and cruised to a 60-28 victory over the MCS Lady Eagles (0-2).
The Eagles (2-0) got plenty of production from junior
big-man Corey Conard (16-points, 15 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals, 1 assist) in
a 52-30 win over the MCS Eagles (0-2)
LADY EAGLES
The Lady Eagles blitzed the MCS Lady Eagles 16-6 in the
first quarter and never looked back.
Lady Eagles' point guard Alyssa McMahan got the Lady
Eagles going, scoring four of her game-high 12 points in the first quarter,
while senior Brittany Frisbee added six, Lexi Lowery four and Maddie Hall two
free throws as the Lady Eagles began their march.
The second quarter was a different game, however, as the
Lady Eagles made frequent trips to the free throw line. After going 4-4 from
the line in the first quarter, it was a different story in the second frame as
the Lady Eagles managed to sink only four of their 14 attempts. But, Whitney
Black's first of three three-pointers, and baskets by Maddie Hall, Haley Helton
and Tiffany Smelcer pushed the Lady Eagles' lead to 16, 29-13, at the break.
The Lady Eagles went 2-2 from the line in the third
quarter, but their offense was clicking. Lowery had six points, Frisbee four,
Black had another three pointer, and single baskets from Helton and McMahan did
the trick as the Lady Eagles were on cruise control. The Lady Eagles tightened
the screws on defense, and held MCS to just two third quarter points to make it
46-15 heading into the final frame.
Over the final eight minutes, McMahan scored six, Black
five, and Smelcer two as the Lady Eagles soared home with the 32-point victory.
CHS: Alyssa McMahan 12, Whitney Black 11, Lexi Lowery 11,
Brittany Frisbee 10, Haley Helton 6, Madie Hall 5, Tiffany Smelcer 4, Taylor
Valentine 1.
MCS: Taylor Burns 10, Kaylie Hall 6, Sarah Smith 4,
Skylar Wiggins 4, Amber Shults 3, Hannah Reynolok 1.
EAGLES
The Eagles never could quite shake MCS, but MCS had no
answer for Cosby's big man, Corey Conard, on the inside.
The Eagles established their dominance inside early with
senior Seth Wyatt scoring eight of his ten points over the first eight minutes.
Conard added four and point guard Andrew Adams hit a basket as the Eagles led
14-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Eagles' junior Zach Webb got the Cosby faithful on their
feet in the second frame when he knocked down a three-pointer. Conard added four more and Jake Green picked
up a basket to give the Eagles a nine-point lead at the break, 23-14.
The Eagles went to their outside game in the third
quarter, with junior Robert Herzog knocking down six of his eight points on the
night and Adams getting two more buckets. But, MCS managed to match the Eagles
output and the Cosby lead remained at nine, 33-24, at the end of three.
The Eagle offense came alive over the last eight minutes,
though, and Cosby outscored MCS 19-6. Conard was unstoppable in the paint,
getting eight points while Timmy Humphrey nailed a three pointer, and single
baskets by Herzog, Wyatt, Brandon Gates and Jake Ledford lifted the Eagles to
the 22-point victory.
CHS: Corey Conard 16, Seth Wyatt 10, Robert Herzog 8,
Andrew Adams 6, Zach Webb 3, Timmy Humphrey 3, Jake Ledford 2, Jake Green 2,
Brandon Gates 2.
MCS: Daniel McGraw 9, Andy Gillespie 6, Micah Jennings 5,
Aaron Burroughs 4, Tyler Burns 3, Isaiah Caldwell 2, Andrew Campbell 1.
BOYS JV
It wasn't exactly the way first-year head coach Jody Lowe
had hoped for. Coaching his very first game on the high school level, Lowe, a
former Cosby standout, saw his Eagle junior varsity squad upended by MCS by a
single point, 47-46.
The Eagles were slow to start with MCS jumping out to an
11-4 first quarter lead. All four points for the Eagles came from Tate Parton.
The Eagles found a little more offense in the second quarter
on baskets by Parton, Luke Lemons, Timmy Humphrey, Drew Schreder and Cory
Swann, and a free throw from Tanner Phillips, but MCS led by 11, 26-15, at the
break.
Phillips came alive in the third quarter, scoring 15 of
his game-high 19 points, and along with baskets by Schreder, Lemons and Timmy
Smelcer, the Eagles pushed to a two-point lead over MCS, 36-34, heading into
the final quarter.
But, MCS would win this one at the free throw line, going
5-7 over the final eight minutes while the Eagles went 1-5, and MCS escaped
with the single-point victory.
CHS: Tanner Phillips 19, Tate Parton 8, Luke Lemons 7,
Timmy Humphrey 4, Drew Schreder 4, Cory Swann 2, Timmy Smelcer 2.
MCS: Isaiah Caldwell 17, Micah Jennings 13, Eric Fields
11, Kurtis Brandum 4, Tanner Shields 1, Shane Wells 1.
