NEWPORT—Main Street in Newport literally came to a crashing halt Friday afternoon after an oncoming train crushed a tractor-trailer carrying chicken nuggets shortly before 4 p.m.

According to witnesses at the scene, the semi was sitting on the tracks at the crossing near the intersection of Woodlawn Ave. and Main St.

The truck driver attempted to complete the crossing unsuccessfully as the train approached.

The Norfolk Southern train continued down the tracks for nearly half a mile before coming to a complete stop.

The truck driver and his rig came to a stop on Woodlawn Ave.

Boxes of chicken nuggets and various other pieces of debris littered Main St. Sections of the trucks trailer were carried far passed the main crossing, landing in front of the Newport Dry Goods.

The Newport Police Department directed traffic for several hours after the incident.

Norfolk Southern’s team spent that time recreating the accident.

The Newport Street Department helped clear the roadway of the dozens of boxes of nuggets.

No injuries were reported at the time of the accident.

A more complete story from this accident will appear in the Tuesday edition of The Newport Plain Talk.
