NEWPORT—The Newport Police Department has become aware that scammers are using or spoofing telephone numbers associated with the City of Newport.

The callers are saying that the call recipient’s medical alert devices are ready to ship. The NPD encourages citizens to be aware that these calls are apparently an attempt to secure personal information from the call recipients.

Newport Police Chief Maurice Shults said, “We want to remind our citizens not to give any personal information to anyone that they do not know. As a general rule you should never give personal information during a telephone call that you did not initiate. We would also encourage relatives and caregivers of vulnerable adults to talk their relatives and clients about keeping their personal information safe.”
