NEWPORT—Two people are facing charges after they were found in possession of heroin Wednesday evening.

The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office identified the individuals as Thomas David Edwards, 23, Henderson Road, Hartford, and Megan Elizabeth Coley, 30, Elizabethton. Both were charged with possession of schedule I among other charges.

On Wednesday, Deputy Daniel Smith was dispatched to Eastern Plaza concerning a traffic stop initiated by the Cocke County CID division. Upon arrival, both Edwards and Coley were already detained by law enforcement.

Deputy Smith said he deployed K9 Hammer to conduct a free “air sniff” of the vehicle and the K9 altered deputies to the passenger side of the vehicle.

A subsequent search revealed a folded green paper filled with a “powdery” substance of suspected heroin in the floor. A scale and several needles were also discovered.

Both Coley and Edwards were charged with possession of schedule I. Edwards was additionally charged with sale, delivery, manufacture and possession of drugs and violation of probation.
